Dr. Laxmi Tamang

Vice Chairperson

Laxmi Tamang is a pioneering initiator and lead co-founder of the Midwifery Society of Nepal, established in 2010, and a nurse-led stand-alone birthing centre founded in 2006. With over 25 years of extensive experience in sexual and reproductive health and rights, she has worked in clinical, community, and academic settings. Laxmi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, a Master of Public Health, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine, focusing on the influence of gender power relations on sexual and reproductive health among Nepalese youth. Her passion for women’s health and empowerment was sparked in 1996 while rehabilitating survivors of sex trafficking at the Women’s Rehabilitation Centre. Laxmi’s dedication to midwifery and empowering women from conception to end-of-life continues through her work with marginalised communities. As a driving force for positive change, she advocates for gender equality and women’s rights in Nepal.
