About the Holiday

Bhai Tika is the fifth and final day of Tihar. Sisters worship their brothers and pray to Yamaraj, the god of death, for their brothers’ long and healthy lives.

Brothers in turn give tika, gifts and blessings to their sisters, celebrating the lifelong bond between siblings.

Nepali date: 2083/07/25 B.S.

How It Is Celebrated

  • Sisters apply a seven-coloured tika (saptarangi tika) and place garlands of makhamali flowers on their brothers.
  • A protective circle of oil and water is drawn around the brothers during the ritual.
  • Siblings exchange gifts, sweets and sel roti, and families share a festive meal.
